Why a Murder Mystery Should Have One Provable Solution
A mystery is not fair merely because the author knows who did it. The published evidence must eliminate every alternative and leave exactly one complete solution available to the reader.

A plausible answer is not a proof
Several suspects may have motives and opportunities. The intended culprit becomes provable only when every required category—identity, time, route, object or location—fits and each alternative fails at least one stated constraint.
- Suspicion narrows attention; constraints determine the answer.
- Motive supports a case but should not replace opportunity.
- The solution must not depend on facts revealed after the puzzle.
Uniqueness protects the reader’s work
When two arrangements satisfy all clues, a careful reader can reach a different answer and still be logically correct. That is a construction failure, not a reader failure. A unique solution ensures the promised deduction experience is real.
- Test the complete assignment, not only the killer’s name.
- Search deliberately for a second valid arrangement.
- Add a clue only if it removes a genuine ambiguity.
Every clue should earn its place
A clue is redundant when removing it leaves the same unique solution and inference path. Redundancy can make a puzzle feel busy without making it deeper. Strong cases use each clue to establish a fact, connect two deductions or close an alternative.
- Remove one clue at a time during testing.
- Check whether another clue already proves the same restriction.
- Keep atmospheric detail separate from formal constraints.
The inference chain is the final audit
A full solution should explain how the reader could move from the published clues to the answer. Printing only the completed grid hides gaps. The inference chain shows that the conclusion was earned and lets readers diagnose where their own reasoning diverged.
