The Weighing Room

Rain rattled the shutters of Rosewater House until the old timbers sounded like distant gunfire. When the cook raised the alarm, Zora Bell found estate factor Cyrus Venn slumped across the desk beyond the weighing room, one hand still resting on an unfinished ledger.

The office shutters had been secured from inside. A silk cord lay close to the body, and the stopped desk clock fixed the fatal moment at nine. Whoever killed Venn had stood at the shutter line before the house settled into silence.

Basil James placed a letter opener on the table before Zora could ask for it. He insisted he had not arrived at nine. Celia Cato spoke more carefully: whatever she had done that evening, she said, had been intended to protect someone.

Darius Jules admitted carrying the medicine vial. His account sounded rehearsed, but the pressure behind it was unmistakable—someone had coerced him. Amara Clarke was equally firm on one point: she had never entered the office.

The staff book recorded the library visitor at eight and the office visitor at nine. A separate inventory note showed that the brass candlestick had not been entered against the nine o’clock arrival.

The cook remembered only one guest clearly: the person beside the kitchen door had been acting under coercion. Zora compared that statement with the conservatory log and found that coercion belonged there too. Neither Basil nor Darius could have been the half-past-eight arrival. The library register named Basil directly.

One arrival remained incompatible with inheritance: the person who came at eight. The infirmary record, however, was tied directly to inheritance, and its signed entry named Amara. Protection could not belong to the person who claimed there had been no witness.

Nothing in the house stood alone. A room fixed a time; a time excluded an object; an account exposed a motive. Zora drew five grids and began crossing away every combination the records would not permit.
